Ministry Intern Job Description

Ministry Intern Job Description

Overview

The Ministry Internship at the Conyers Church of Christ is designed to provide a training opportunity to work with our congregational families.  The Intern will work under the eldership, the family ministry deacon, with daily report to the minister. The Intern will be considered a full, participating member of the church staff and will be assigned specific areas of responsibility.

The internship is for 10+/- weeks during the months of May, June, July and August, ministering to families and youth. The timing has some flexibility depending on the schedule of the school from which this person comes to us.  It is our goal for you as an intern to connect with the families God has entrusted to us in this ministry.

Objective

The objective for the intern is to win souls to Christ, connect them with other Christians, and to help them grow in their faith. The Intern will serve, lead, teach, mentor, and encourage families in their walk with God. Our desire is to create an atmosphere that encourages attendance and visitor invitations (Galatians 5:22-23).  We encourage our Interns to follow the words of Paul when he said to Titus…“In everything set them an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity, seriousness, and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned”  (Titus 2:7-8).

Responsibilities and Expectations

The Intern is responsible for teaching two weekly Bible classes (One on Sunday and One on Wednesday, two classes taught). This may rotate with one of the elders between adults and youth. The Intern will write a short article concerning families the activities for the weekly bulletin. The intern helps lead summer camp, outreach efforts, teaches in Vacation Bible School and other ministry projects should the opportunities present themselves.  The Intern also helps coordinate weekly nursing home visits by our elementary students.  The Intern will have a minimum of three opportunities to preach.

Because spiritual growth often takes place in the context of a relationship, it is important that our intern spend a lot of time building relationships with families.

The intern will typically have routine daily office hours beginning at 9:00 AM and concluding at 1:00 PM Monday through Friday.  Due to the nature of ministry, circumstances may require adjustments to the office routine.  The Intern is expected to communicate clearly with the minister and office staff as adjustment needs arise.  The Intern is expected to attend all meetings of the congregation such as care group meetings, teacher’s meetings and the monthly meeting with elders and deacons.

Spiritual growth is fundamental to our ministry, so the day typically begins with a devotional, and the intern will keep a personal journal recording experiences and spiritual growth. This will be reviewed by the minister on a weekly basis and the elders will be copied on the same. Mornings are used for planning, coordination with adult youth volunteers, class and activity preparation, and administrative duties. Many afternoons/evenings are spent with families, developing relationships – either in group activities (planned and spontaneous) or supervised counseling and prayer. (AT NO TIME SHOULD THE INTERN BE ALONE WITH A STUDENT OR YOUNG ADULT OF OPPOSITE GENDER. IT IS BEST IN EVERY CASE TO HAVE ANOTHER ADULT ALWAYS IN VIEW.)

Due to the short nature of this position, time off is very limited. Emergency situations will be dealt with on an individual basis. Off days will be when functions are not scheduled for those days. Sundays should not be taken off during this period of time. The eldership is understanding toward unforseen circumstances.

Termination of this agreement on the part of the youth intern will expect a formal, written communication two weeks prior to the proposed date of termination. The elders reserve the right to terminate this agreement at any time for any cause they deem necessary.

There are policies governing interns’ private lives, and they will be strictly enforced for the duration of employment. There will be NO dating between the Ministry Intern and any member of our youth group. All relationships with teens should be above reproach. There are NO exceptions to this policy. Dress, language, behavior, and attitude must be worthy of a servant of the Almighty God.  Specifically, the intern should not drink alcohol, use illegal drugs, tobacco or vaping devices. The use of inappropriate/vulgar language, engaging in sexual immorality, or wearing immodest clothing will not be tolerated. Violation of the afore-mentioned and “such like” (Galatians 5:19-21) will result in immediate termination.
